What is 7-Zip?

  • 7-Zip is a file archiver tool, used to place groups of files within compressed containers. 
  • It is free software with open source. 
  • It has its own archive format called 7z, but it can read and write several other formats.


Features

  • High compression ratio in 7z format with LZMA and LZMA2 compression. 
  • Supported formats:
    • Packing / unpacking: 7z, XZ, BZIP2, GZIP, TAR, ZIP and WIM
    • Unpacking only: AR, ARJ, CAB, CHM, CPIO, CramFS, DMG, EXT, FAT, GPT, HFS, IHEX, ISO, LZH, LZMA, MBR, MSI, NSIS, NTFS, QCOW2, RAR, RPM, SquashFS, UDF, UEFI, VDI, VHD, VMDK, WIM, XAR and Z. 
  • For ZIP and GZIP formats, 7-Zip provides a compression ratio that is 2-10 % better than the ratio provided by PKZip and WinZip
  • Strong AES-256 encryption in 7z and ZIP formats. 
  • Self-extracting capability for 7z format. 
  • Powerful command line version. 
  • Works in Windows 10 / 8 / 7 / Vista / XP / 2019 / 2016 / 2012 / 2008 / 2003 / 2000.

Download

  • Click here to download from the official site. 

Install

  • Goto Downloads folder and double click on the 7z1900-x64.exe file. 

  • Give the User Access Control by clicking on Yes.

Usage

Compress Files:

  • Here are different files and folders: testFolder, file1, file2, file3, and file4. 

  • Select all files, right click on it and choose 7-Zip > Add to “Sample.7z”. 


  • Files and folders are compress to Sample.7z .


Read Files: 

  • Double click on filename Sample.7z 


Extract Files:

  • Right click on filename Sample.7z and choose 7-Zip > Extract Here


  • Here are the extracted files, folders and file content.

Uninstall

We can uninstall this application in 2 ways, from the control panel and Uninstall file from 7-Zip.

Control Panel:

  • Open the Control Panel 


  • Click on Uninstall a program


  • Double click on 7-Zip 19.00 (x64) and click on Uninstall, then after click Close.

Uninstall File:

  • Goto file location C:\Program Files\7-Zip and double click on the Uninstall.

  • Click on Uninstall button and then after click on Close. 


Conclusion

  • 7-Zip is tested on Windows 7 Professional on Virtualbox.
  • It is working fine.
