Cain and Abel - Windows

What is Cain & Abel ?

• Cain & Abel is one of the most important security tools that is probably in the software toolkit of every security professional.
• Cain and Abel was a password recovery tool for Microsoft Windows. 
• It could recover various kinds of passwords using methods like sniffing the network, cracking encrypted passwords using Dictionary, Brute-Force and Cryptanalysis attacks, recording VoIP conversations, decoding scrambled passwords, recovering wireless network keys, revealing password boxes, uncovering cached passwords and analyzing routing protocols. 
• It not only extracts the saved passwords from apps, but it can also decipher any type of password.

Hands-on

Requirements

• Operating System: Windows. 
• Tools: 7-Zip, WinPcap, Cain & Abel. 

Note:  Before installing the Cain & Abel, make sure to download and install 7-Zip(Click here to install 7-Zip) and WinPcap(Click here to install WinPcap).  Turn off Firewall and Antivirus solutions.

 

Download

• Click here to download from the official site. 

Install

• Goto Downloads folder and double click on the ca_setup.exe file. 

• Give the User Account Control by clicking on Yes. 

• A setup window will be opened, click on Next > Next > Next > Next > Next > Finish. 

 

• It will ask you to install WinPcap. If you have already installed WinPcap click on Don't Install, if not click on Install. 

Note:   Recommended to install WinPcap manually (Click here to install WinPcap).

Usage

Double click on the Cain icon to open the tool and click on Yes to Give User Account Control. 

 

Sniffing Web Application Password

• Click on Sniffer icon > Sniffer > Passwords > HTTP. Next login into the website(http://testphp.vulnweb.com/login.php) with user:test and password:test. 

 

• After login, the credentials are stored in the Cain & Abel tool. 

Uninstall 

We can uninstall this application in 2 ways, from the control panel and UNWISE.exe file from Cain & Abel. 

Control Panel 

• Open the Control panel. 

• Click on Uninstall a program. 

• Double click on Cain & Abel 4.9.56. 

• An Uninstall window will be opened. Click on Next > Finish. 

Uninstall File 

• Goto file location C:\Program Files (x86)\Cain and double click on the UNWISE.exe file. 

• Give the User Account Control by clicking on Yes. 

• An Uninstall window will be opened. Click on Next > Finish. 

Conclusion 

• Cain & Abel 4.9.5 is tested on Windows 7 Professional on Virtualbox.
